Pet food recall grows to include first dry products

Nestle Purina is pulling its Alpo "Prime cuts in gravy wet dog food" with certain date codes. Last night Hill's pet nutrition recalled a dry cat food called "Prescription diet MD." Both products may include contaminated wheat gluten from china The FDA says the gluten contained a potentially dangerous chemical called melamine. Testing has found melamine in samples of recalled pet food as well as in crystal form in the urine and kidney tissue of dead cats.

Also, experts said cats may have a greater sensitivity to a chemical found in plastics and pesticides than dogs. And they say that could explain why they've died in larger numbers after eating contaminated pet food.

The government is still trying to confirm that is what killed at least 15 pets so far. And they warn there will likely be more deaths reported.

A complete list of the recalled products along with product codes, descriptions and production dates was available from the Menu Foods Web site, menufoods.com/recall. The company also designated two phone numbers that pet owners could call for information - (866) 463-6738 and (866) 895-2708.
