Designed by the brilliant engineer John Augustus Roebling (1806-1869)
and completed by his equally ingenious son Washington Roebling
(1837-1926). Considered by many to be the world's most beautiful,
the Brooklyn Bridge was, at the time of its completion, the first
steel and longest suspension bridge in the world, and its enormous
support towers were once New York's tallest structures. Completed
in 1883, it joined New York and Brooklyn - what were then two
very separate cities. Affording sensational views of the skyline,
harbor and the bridge itself, a one-way walk across takes about
20 minutes.
